This photograph dates from the mid-late 1960s when Lundin Mill Primary School was still located on Crescent Road at the site of the present library. If you can pinpoint the class and/or date or know anyone in the picture, please comment. It shows the playground behind the school building. Beyond the brick wall you can see the tops of the buildings on Emsdorf Street. The small piece of black and white building frontage, just visible in the centre background, is the La Scala cinema. The old school was built in the 1850s and closed in 1974, when the present primary school opened. The new school building celebrates its 40th anniversary this year. The old school building continues to house the village library. Please comment if you have memories of the old school on Crescent Road.

In the 1950s the old school in Crescent Road rattled with the endless shouting voices of a couple of teachers rather than noisy children. Apparently the worst offender was a very nice women when outside the class room! Then suddenly that style of teaching vanished to be replaced by a more enlightened approach. Also replaced were the old fashioned black boards, the pre-war reading books, the Victorian desks with inkwells, and the shiny, cracked maps covered in Empire pink. Then, Miss Stott arrived to replace Mr Mackintosh as Head Teacher - and we climbed Largo Law at dawn on May Day where we washed our faces in the dew - went to Edinburgh to see a play - and were allowed to bring sweets into class provided everyone was offered one! A lesson cleverly taught. The old school became a very cosy place.

I attended Lundin Mill Primary School 1967-73 and remember classmates Jackie Horne, Isabel Shepherd and Wilma Melville. However, I don’t recognise any of us from this photograph. Our teachers were Mrs Moir and then Mrs Ross followed by Mrs Gallagher and eventually Miss Stott. It was a wonderful beginning to my education which led me on to Buckhaven High School, Edinburgh University and beyond. I feel extremely fortunate to have experienced this primary school and how it prepared me for my future life.
