This atmospheric scene of Lower Largo featured on a postcard sent in July 1912. The sender was a John Rose who wrote "I am spending the day here with the choir picnic". This was sent to Miss Alexandrina Lowe of Kirkpark House, Musselburgh. Largo was a favourite day trip destination for many clubs and groups. The panorama stretches from the Crusoe Hotel on the left, round the bay to Cardy Works and Cardy House on the right. The start of The Temple is just visible on the extreme right - the prominent upper window of the central house in the group of white-coloured homes below stands out. This grouping of characterful buildings was once the entirety of the village of Temple (see painting at foot of post).

Whilst the upper photograph is on a postcard posted July 1912, the image is much older. There being two clues to its age, IE there appears to be no sign of the road infront of the net factory which was constructed in 1903. The Crusoe Hotel still has the original pitched roof and gable which was destroyed in a fire in 1911, being replaced by a flat roof and parapet walls (which can still be seen today) until the present hip ended pitched roof was built in the 30's I think. It was very common for postcard manufacturers such as Valentines to keep using old images and even overlay part new images in the foreground of old cards prior to reprinting.

Also this postcard had an undivided back. As divided back postcards were introduced from 1902, this one might have been old stock in the shop that sold it.

In the painting above, featuring fishing boats on the beach, does anyone know what the white building, just off centre to the right is?

The white buildings are the original dwellings at the start of the Temple. These were demolished around 1967 and now in their place are modern homes.

I’m wondering if you know the title of the painting of The Temple above and the artist’s name? We’ve not longed moved into 5 Temple and I think the last White House on the right is the one that demolished and replaced with the one we are now living in.

Unfortunately I do not know the name of either the painting or the artist. However, you are correct that the far right house is the one that was demolished and replaced with the present number 5.
