In October 1930, the Evening Telegraph reported on a break-in at these garages. At the time half of the building was occupied by John Horne and the other by John Hay - both were described as 'motor hirers'. Some of their business would have been to convey visitors to the village between the station and their boarding houses or hotels and the like. Both premises were broken into in 1930 and three men subsequently were sent to prison for theft of various items.
The above image (created by stitching together three stills from an old cine film) dates to around 1960 when the garage run by the Horne family occupied the side of Woodielea Road nearest to the Lundin Ladies Golf Club House. Prior to the age of the motor car, there had been stables on the site, sometime associated with the Lundin Links Hotel. Around the time of this photograph, some local residents garaged their cars here if they had not yet had a driveway and garage added to their own home. This small image shows the roof of the garage in the summer of 1979, just prior to demolition. Five houses were built upon the site by builder Bruce Baillie in 1980.

I've not come across any old photos of the garage now known as Mercury Motors but would like to put together a blog piece about that garage at some point - need to research it a bit more first!

Actually there was another garage on Largo Road, it is on the corner opposite Ernest Cottage, this to the best of my knowledge was Jimmy Horne's original garage before they moved to where Mercury Motors is now, They lived in the house next door called Marywell. My parents owned Ernest Cottage between 1959 to 1998. I have somewhere a picture, taken in 1960 showing this part of the street. If you would like to see it, I can email it to you, is there a email account to drop of pictures.
