The circa 1950s view across Lundin Links beach towards Leven, Methil and Buckhaven shows the contrast between the people in the foreground enjoying themselves relaxing in the sun, buying ice-cream and paddling in the sea and the heavy industry taking place in the background. Below are some magnified views of the beach-goers at Massney Braes. The detail below shows the chimneys and industrial buildings to the west of Largo Bay - among them the Wellesley Colliery (see foot of post). The Wellesley operated from the mid-1880s until 1967. Methil Power Station became a prominent feature from the mid-1960s until 2011. Now wind turbines dot the horizon in this direction.

I remember the large pyramid roofed hut at Massney Braes,in the early 70's it was nearly buried by the encroaching dunes to the extent that you could walk onto the roof from the back!.The photo of the Wellesley Colliery shows the Baum coal washing plant, the site was cleared and replaced by Redpath Dormin Long in the early 70's who built huge steel oil production jacket platforms for the North Sea, now the site is occupied by Bifab who build similar shaped tho smaller structures for supporting marine sited wind turbines.

My father worked in the coal washer at the Wellesley pit in the sixties. His name was James ( Jim ) Clark from Leven.
