Known as the La Scala Cinema from the 1920s until the 1960s, the building was subsequently used as a restaurant/bar until it was closed then demolished in the late 1980s. The image below, shows the gap sight around 1989 with a board up advertising the flats to be built on the site.
Aside from being a cinema, La Scala on Emsdorf Street was the venue for many occasions over the years. Newspaper archives mention a performance by a travelling theatre, dances and socials, fund raisers for many local causes, a fancy dress carnival, whist drives, lectures, concerts, flower shows, and public meetings. One such public meeting took place in February 1926 to discuss the crumbling Largo Pier. According to the Courier of 6 February, the pier was "fast going to destruction by the heavy seas which have been raging in the Forth" and it was feared that "Largo as a summer resort would lose its reputation if something was not done to the pier, which was the meeting place of many summer visitors."

There were two shops either side of the front door of the cinema. One was a barber shop that my father, Alex Fraser, ran in the 1950s after his apprenticeship with Chris Maule in Leven.

I have great memories of walking to The La Scala with my chums every Friday night in the fifties for what was then called "modern dancing". Loved the walk and the dancing!
