The word 'orry' or 'orra' seems to mean a place which can have a variety of miscellaneous uses. The term 'an orra man' has been used to describe an odd-job man. It can also mean 'spare' or there to be used by whoever needs it. Another interpretation of the term seems to be 'occasional' or 'incidental'. I imagine over time the space known as the Orry has had a range of uses, including use as a gathering place, a space for buying and selling, for storage, fishing-related activities and of course, nowadays, parking cars! If you know more about the history of the space, please comment.
The two views above looking along Lower Largo Beach towards Temple Hill from close to the Orry were taken several decades apart. Although there are lots of similarities between the views, the two shots are very different in character. The black and white image has only a solitary pair of walkers, struggling along the sand on what looks like a cool day. The recently captured colour photo shows the large number of pleasure boats parked close to the Orry and some people having a picnic on the beach (albeit with a wind break).
